Burger King significantly increased the number of units in 2019.
Restaurant Brands International (RBI), the parent company of Burger King, Tim Hortons and Popeyes, reports an 8.3 percent increase in system sales (own and franchise restaurants) in 2019, with one of the three brands performing significantly better than the other two.
This is because the year-on-year growth in system sales
reveals significant differences between the chains. Burger King,
for example, is slightly above the overall average with a
plus of 9.3 percent
, while Tim Hortons
' sales even fell by 0.3 percent
. The Popeyes
chicken chain is revealing itself as a high-flyer in 2019: system sales rose by 18.5 percent
compared to 2018, RBI CEO Jose Cil
attributes this primarily to one item on the menu: "Popeyes has launched a real game changer for the brand at all levels with the iconic chicken sandwich," said Cil.
A similar picture is revealed when looking at same-store-sales, the "hard currency" of the industry (comparable sales). Here Popeyes gained a very strong 12.1 percent, Burger King 3.4 percent, while Tim Hortons fell short of expectations with a minus of 1.5 percent. "Our performance does not reflect the power of the Tim Hortons brand. In 2020, we must recall our founding values and what has made us famous among our guests over the years", says RBI CEO Cil, summing up.
In terms of the number of restaurants as of 31.12.2019, all three brands were able to record an increase in the bottom line. Accordingly, most units belong to Burger King (18,838, +5.9 % in 2018), followed by Tim Hortons (4,932, +2.1 %) and Popeyes (3,316, +6.9 %). Burger King in particular stands out in unit growth. "Burger King is experiencing the strongest absolute restaurant growth in the last 20 years," said Cil. This puts the company on track for its long-term goal: In 8 to 10 years, RBI wants to have more than 40,000 restaurants worldwide.
