At Anuga 2021, the COVID-19-related changes in the industry, including food in particular, are to play a central role.

Anuga in Cologne, the world's largest trade fair for food and beverages, wants to focus on the transformation of nutrition and the industry. "Transform" is the name of the new leading theme at Anuga 2021, which is intended to address the COVID-19-related nutritional turnaround, among other things, which is taking place at all levels of the production and supply chain. Is the industry on the brink of significant change?

Yes!, say Anuga organizers, who have already found in a representative survey of exhibitors and visitors at the 2019 show that 60 percent of respondents think the industry is facing significant change.

The pandemic has now reinforced this trend. COVID-19 has a lasting impact on people's lives and has shown that change can come suddenly and with a strong impact, the show says. The pandemic acts like a burning glass and reveals the weak points in health policy, the economy and society.
About food trends and focus topics at Anuga 2021
The transformation process in the industry is reflected in particular in the food trends and focus topics at Anuga 2021. These show that the food and beverage industry is meeting the challenges of change with new approaches and innovative products. The megatrends include the topics of sustainability, health and digitalisation, which were also confirmed by a representative survey of exhibitors and visitors at Anuga 2019. In addition, there are food trends such as Alternative Meat Proteins, Clean Label, Convenience & Snacking, Free From & Health Foods, Plant-based Proteins or Foods, Superfoods & Ancient Grains as well as Sustainably Produced or Packaged and focus topics such as Halal, Kosher, Gourmet & Specialty Foods and Private Label.

Focus on nutritional transformation

In 2021, the organisers of Anuga will therefore be focusing in particular on the transformation of nutrition under the central theme of "Transform". The world's largest trade fair for food and beverages sees itself as an international business network and central communication platform that actively supports the transformation process and helps the industry to secure and continue its economic success, the trade fair organisers emphasise.

"Added to this are current challenges such as export and travel restrictions, the increased demand for products with health benefits, the virtual standstill in the out-of-home market and a field of tension between different systems, such as globalisation versus deglobalisation or convenience versus sustainability and zero waste," explains Stefanie Mauritz, Director Anuga. Here, Anuga 2021 will offer new formats that make the numerous transformation processes visible.
About Anuga@home
In 2021, the new digital platform Anuga@home is to provide new paths and inspiration alongside the 10 trade fairs and supplement the attendance fair to create a hybrid format. From panel discussions to online seminars, company and product presentations to a virtual café, there should be something for everyone, the trade show organizers promise. This will create a platform where experts and decision-makers from a wide range of sectors will come together to discuss and initiate new, sustainable approaches for the food and beverage industry.

New congress and specialised event formats

  • Transform. With the Anuga debut of the New Food Conference organised by ProVeg under the motto "Plant-based meets cellular agriculture" and the continuation of the innovation summit "Newtrition X - Personalised Nutrition" together with foodregio, the focus will be on sustainable and health-promoting nutrition.
  • Anuga Clean Label. The new special format is intended to take account of the megatrend of sustainability and the resulting growing demand for clean eating, the consumer's desire for healthy food that is prepared naturally. Participation in the new special format Anuga Clean Label enables exhibitors to attract special attention from international buyers who are looking for products from the Non-GMO and Natural segments.
  • Free From, Health & Functional. With this special format, Anuga is picking up on the health megatrend. Buyers interested in trend products will be able to gain a targeted overview of this range, it is said. At the same time, exhibitors at the trade fair will have a focused stage for placing products with additional health-oriented benefits.
