The Corona crisis acts as a catalyst in many business areas. This also applies to cashless payment transactions in the catering industry. Cashless payment options and mobile services such as Apple Pay or Google Pay have long been expected by guests. Samsung Pay is currently being rolled out and will be available shortly.

The drivers for the use of mobile payment range from contact and cash avoidance to convenience and new technical innovations such as mobile ordering. Mobile payment is considered by experts to be a major future gamechanger.

With WhatsApp Pay, another provider could enter the field in the future. At least if the company Facebook, to which the messenger service belongs, has its way. Tests are already underway in India and Brazil. Even though the Brazilian central bank has currently vetoed the development and fears distortions of competition, this development will probably not be so easy to stop.

Once a customer has submitted their credit card or Paypal details, the money transfer is done with just one click in the chat. Security is guaranteed by fingerprint, FaceID or an individual code.

This trend could be particularly exciting in terms of the further development of WhatsApp Business, and thus the entire customer journey. It is not yet possible to estimate when WhatsApp Pay will be available in Europe.
