Coop launches a new concept in Berne: supermarket, vinotheque, beverage world, coffee bar and a large offer of freshly made food products are now under one roof.

After a conversion period of around seven months, Coop is opening a shopping and gourmet destination on the ground floor in Marktgass Bern, covering an area of around 800 square metres. "A gem has been created that leaves nothing to be desired and enriches the shopping offer in the city centre," explains managing director File Gjokaj. Large window fronts are designed to provide plenty of daylight, while the special shopfitting concept and the high-quality materials used are intended to harmonise with the listed building.

Preparation in front of the customers

A coffee bar with its own roastery has been installed, and pasta, pizza, focaccia and fresh baked goods are also on offer, as are salads and poke bowls, grilled chicken and sweet pastries. "The production areas are open plan, and much of the food is homemade and prepared right in front of the customers," they say.

All of the products from the food court are available "to go" as well as for consumption on site. Space for this is provided by seating on the ground floor and the market gas lounge with 42 seats on the upper floor. Culinary and cultural events will be offered, as well as tastings with local and regional producers. "It makes me proud that we can offer customers in the heart of Bern a Coop outlet that is unique in Switzerland with such a special and varied range of products," emphasises Stefano Alberucci, Head of Coop Sales Region Bern.

A supermarket with around 12,000 articles and a beauty island was already opened on the upper floor of the building at the end of May. More than 1,200 regional, Swiss and foreign wines, a wide range of spirits and more than 500 beers await customers in the Marktgass wine shop and the beer and beverage world. The range also includes various local and non-alcoholic soft drinks. In the basement of the building, a fitness studio covering an area of around 1,400 square meters will open in September.
