Hospitality sales are still strongly affected by the Corona crisis. In this context, the hotel industry is outperforming the restaurant industry in terms of figures.

In July 2022 compared with June 2022, hospitality sales, adjusted for calendar and seasonal effects, fell by 1.5 percent in real terms (price-adjusted) and rose by 0.4 percent in nominal terms (not price-adjusted). As the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) further reported according to preliminary results, turnover in the out-of-home market was 10.2 percent higher in real terms and 19.0 percent higher in nominal terms than in July 2021, the same month of the previous year.

Compared to July 2019, the same month before the Corona crisis, hospitality turnover in July 2022 was 9.3 percent lower in real terms and 4.3 percent higher in nominal terms. The difference between the nominal and real results reflects the high price increases in the hospitality sector (+7.9% year-on-year).

In the restaurant industry, July 2022 sales were 0.6 percent lower in real terms than in the previous month. Compared to July 2021, sales were up 7.7 percent, but still 11.1 percent below July 2019 levels.

Hotels perform better
