New Michelin hotspot: The metropolis of Dubai
New Michelin hotspot: The metropolis of Dubai

The Michelin Guide restaurant guide has added Dubai to its list of culinary hotspots: The Guide Michelin Dubai filters the gastronomic treasures of the multicultural cuisine of the beach metropolis and plans to announce in June the recommendations that promise a very special culinary experience.

"We are delighted to announce that Dubai will join the Michelin family," said Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of Michelin Guides. "We will unveil the latest selection later this year, showcasing the best of Dubai's gastronomy."

Guide Michelin

In 1900, brothers André and Édouard Michelin - the founders of the French tire manufacturer Michelin - came up with the idea of publishing a small handbook with practical information such as addresses of fuel depots, workshops, restaurants and accommodations. The Michelin Guide was born.

By 1910, the international series covered all Western European countries from Belgium to Great Britain to Portugal. The Guide is now present in more than 30 nations on four continents. From 1900 to 2017, more than 30 million copies were sold worldwide.

The city is not only synonymous with luxury and opulence: thanks to its location and history, Dubai offers a unique culinary diversity, Poullennec added. "In addition to the establishments of many world-renowned chefs, we will also focus on simple neighborhood restaurants that showcase Dubai and Middle Eastern cuisine and its rich culture. This selection will offer guests a unique insight into the diverse offerings of this exciting city."

Dubai is home to thousands of restaurants offering a variety from street food to fine dining. The traditional Arabic cuisine of Emiratis meets flavors and recipes from more than 200 other nationalities living in Dubai.

The criteria of the Guide

The established test procedure of the Guide Michelin experts will also be used in Dubai. It includes the following five criteria: the quality of ingredients, the culinary art, the harmony of flavors, the personal touch of the chef and the play of textures within the overall menu. Only restaurants that excel on all counts can make it to the select list.

The Michelin star system
  • 1 Michelin star goes to restaurants with "high quality cuisine worth stopping for".
  • 2 Michelin stars goes to restaurants with "excellent cuisine for which a return visit is worthwhile"
  • 3 Michelin stars are given to restaurants with "exceptional cuisine that is worth making a stop for"
  • In addition: with the Bib Gourmand category, the Guide Michelin recognizes restaurants that offer particularly great value for money for 3-course menus

More than 7 million overnight visitors (+32 percent compared to 2020) were recorded by Dubai Tourism in 2021, and the publication of the first Michelin Dubai Guide this year is seen by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) as a catalyst to further position Dubai as the first choice for foodies and gourmets seeking authentic culinary experiences to suit all tastes and budgets. After being voted the world's favorite destination in the 2022 Tripadvisor Traveller's Choice Awards, the inclusion in the Michelin Guide is now another important recognition of Dubai's gastronomic excellence, he added.
