The Zukunftsinstitut, international think tank for trend and future research, has published its latest future report. The yearbook for social trends and business innovations is published annually by editor Matthias Horx. The trend researchers and experts involved in the Future Report have set their sights on 2021 as the "Year of Decisions", in which a new world (dis)order will slowly be revealed.

Thus a large part of the report deals with the remapping of the world and offers new perspectives. Other questions addressed in the Future Report deal with the future of health, social networks, the relationship between city and country, the economy as an efficiency machine and how to escape the crisis by taking comfort and humour.

The Corona Balance: Yesterday is no answer

In his Corona balance sheet,Matthias Horx describes the story of a change that will change the future - from a new relationship with nature, love and friendship put to the test of crisis, conspiracy paranoiacs and the compulsion to think together. "In most countries, the crisis has not split society; on the contrary, it has made the social denser and more visible," Horx says. "Individuals, organizations, societies can spontaneously rise above themselves."

„Besonders Epidemien haben immer wieder Modernisierungsschübe hervorgebracht, neue Kooperationsformen, neue Techniken und Soziotechniken.“
Matthias Horx

According to Horx, the lockdown leads to an "anthropause", an interruption or at least containment of the negative human influence on the atmosphere. "It's worth fighting for a future where our natural balance will improve."

The big correction: Against hatred in the net

The COVID-19 pandemic has impressively demonstrated the importance social media can have in global interaction. Author Anja Kirig, political scientist and trend researcher, recognizes that an evolution of social media has taken place in the context of the pandemic: Slowly, human culture is developing an immune system against the great overwhelming force of anger, hate and fear on the Internet.

"New communication spaces for open and enlightened future design are emerging. (...) Tomorrow's social media mindset will increasingly focus on those skills that social networks have in store for a global future to be shaped together: collaboration and connectivity," says Kirig. More and more content that has been verified by trusted third parties is being violated or shared - influencing requires evidence.

"The Corona pandemic has freed us from the illusion of being outside the natural world: We have no control over nature - we are nature," says the Future Report. This change in perspective is also driving a new, holistic understanding of health.

New plans for the future

Maps have given people a feeling of security and clarity since modern times. But according to the Future Report 2021, we need new plans because the current cartographic method does not take proportions into account, creating a world view illusion of enormous proportions. The "data geographer" and"geo-futurist" Paragh Khanna, who lives in Singapore, for example, has been trying a different cartography for many years: a"mapping" of connections. Here, the earth is not measured as an accumulation of land masses or areas, but as a network.

So the trend researchers in the report have compiled the most beautiful, funniest, honest and hopeful maps for the new world disorder: true proportions of countries, world population maps, terrestrial cables of the global online network, reasons for death, the new world order with new alliances and conflicts, the map of all human lives, the map of human prosperity and renewable strategies to the panorama of fears for the future. The question of what relevance maps have for people is answered by the Future Report 2021:"The way we map the world makes the world, weights it. A world view is an inner matrix, a frame with which we view the world. Worldviews shape our attitudes, expectations, 'preconceptions'. And thus shape our actions."
